Removing Xantia mk2 petrol engine

Hi
I want to remove the engine from my 2001 2.0 16v (RFV) Xantia. I would like to learn from your experience if it can be done without the transmission and will appreciate any advice about it.
let me point out that I've done it on several vehicles that I've ownd before, but not on Xantia, so that I'm not a complete novice.

i have never tried this but would think the easiest route would be drop the lot out in one unit, as i would think it is going to be far easier to split the box from the engine on the floor

Precisely right Malcolm. It has to come out through the top as one unit...

You can take the engine/gearbox unit out through the front as well, but it do involve removing the slam panel, lights, radiator..........

It's a good idea to remove the rad in any case as it saves damaging it...

Agree with rad removal first if possible, failing that a sheet of plywood (cardboard not really up to the job when you have something swing around it will go though that like it was not there!) will help protect it a little bit.

Exactly Andy I have ruined a perfectly good rad in removing an engine that took an unfortunate swing!

Despite the looks of it, and it looks like theres room they do NOT go downwards.. But I also agree, the whole lot needs to come upwards and at an angle in which the gearbox is lower then the engine, so it clear's the chassis ...

Don't expect the lot to wheel forwards out were the front end completely removed
as the cross member under the rad will scupper any idea of wheeling it on a jack so
a hoist would be needed - if that's the case just lift the lot out in one piece from the
top. Whilst the engine can be left in situ where a gearbox is drawn out through the
wheelarch the opposite can't be done leaving the gearbox with just the engine out.

As Paul says, a tilt on the lot helps unhook the gearbox out after the engine clears.
