Late Joiner!

A forum for new members to introduce themselves to the rabble already onboard. Not compulsory!
Tell us a little about yourself, lie if you have to but keep it to just an introduction, not a car discussion.

Late Joiner!

Unread post by RichB »

Hi all,

I've had a lovely (green) 1994 Xantia (although we prefer to call it the Xanadu) 1.9 TD sx that I bought from my dad in 2001 who had it from new.
It's in great nick (for a car 18 years old!) but sadly might be time to let go... although I have been saying that for years…
I think it has a problem with drive shaft bearings but I'm not mechanical so will know more tomorrow after a visit to the garage.

If we do part ways I'd like it to go to a good home (rather than scrap it) as I'm guessing there aren't many Xantia's that old still around.

Any thoughts or advice would be welcome. I'll post more when I have a diagnosis!

Hi Rich. Welcome!

The car looks nice in your avatar picture! An early car is rare these days.

It's not really the end of the world even if the bearings on the driveshafts are duff.
I don't say this lightly as a DIY'er - these are a service item and ANY proficient garage
will be able to remove/fit these. While another likely wear item could be the wheel bearings
on the wheel hub making noises and potentially wearing and scrubbing tyres any play/clicking
on steering lock is a sure sign of bad wear. The end of the driveshaft nearest the wheel
(CV joint) can be replaced economically though:

I say fix it and keep it!! Sounds like you like it. :D

Sincere apologies-I could have sworn I replied to this and the time - and here I am 6th months later!

Many thanks for your feedback. Turned out to be the wheel bearing so you were bang on with your diagnosis, so we've had another 6months good use.
Probably getting a new (second hand) car very soon so think I might be putting it up for sale on here soon.

Don't expect it's worth much but do you think there'd be any interest? As I said before I'd rather get it to someone who'll get use out of it whether as a runner or for spares.

Many thanks and sorry again for long silence!

best
Rich.
