Xantia Steering Column Loose

Post by cc101 »

Hi all, my steering wheel has come loose and you can move it up and down and left and right, it is locked into place and the nut is tight! It moves about a 1cm in all directions!

Any suggestions guys?

Cheers, Chris.

Top column bearing? I seem to recall my car had this replaced by the previous owner before I bought it.

Yeah, my old L reg did the same. Top column bearing.
Whip the steering wheel off, and you might even be able to knock it back down onto the shaft, problem solved.

Cheers

Yep, that'll be it Chris. It causes some MOT testers a good deal of teeth sucking... The easiest way to fix it is to get another steering column from a scrapper.

It's not easy to fix in-situ as the bearing is crimped into the top of the column and I'm not sure if it's available as a spare part on its own.

Fixed it, tapped the bearing back into place and all is well!

Cheers all, Chris.
