Post by boristhespie »

Got timing belt changed when head gasket needed aorted at around 50k. Now at 105k should I be looking at timing belt change and if so should I get water pump changed at same time even though i got them to change it at the time the dis the belt before?
C'est pas possible!

Timing belt change is IIRC 100,000 miles but popular opinion seems to be that 70-80,000 miles is wiser. Just had mine done as I didn't know for certain when it had last been done, car at 180,000. Water pump and tensioners done too.
Water pump should only need doing every second belt change presuming that quality parts were fitted.
As the pump is a relatively inexpensive item it might be wise to have it done anyway, for peace of mind.

i belive mileage or age is a factor in replacement intervals ,

if it reach's 3 to 4 years before the suggested miles it would be best to replace it, thats my view on things anyhow

Hi there, I'm new to Citroen and I'm from Malaysia.
My year 2007 C5 (bought almost 6 months ago) has clocked 128K, is it advisable to change it? Correct me if I'm wrong, the manual seems to suggest to change it at 180K. I've no servicing records/history of this car.

Kindly advise me and Thank you very much.

General consensus is that the timing belt change and service intervals are overly optimistic and belts should be changed at about 70% of the Citroen recommended distance or time (ten years in my case).

As with service intervals - mine are 12500 miles and I do them at half that.

Current car has had it all done as there was no service history with it. Previous one (estate) was done when I bought it too, as the service record was rather vague. As it turned out, the belt had been changed but badly fitted and was in imminent danger of shredding.

Thank you very much for sharing.

180K is about 111 miles.
My mileage is 128K now, so is about 79 miles covered. It looks like it is time for a change going by your advice.

I would agree; it is age that seems to kill them if you otherwise drive the car a lot.

I deliberately ran my engine 25% over the recommended mileage to "see what happened". Nothing! It was only 2½ years old, the timing set. Then I changed it for precautionary reasons.

We always change water pumps now, it is not worth the risk , and fitting a new belt and changing belt tension often sees the pump fail quite soon after if its left.

For the later 16v engines, such as the 2.0HDi 138 in the C5, they state 150K for belt intervals  This doesnt sit well with me, how is a belt and tensioners supposed to last that long, let alone a water pump!

I always replace the water pump while getting the belts done, its not worth leaving and I usually find by belt change they have developed a slight leak anyway.
