Pass on the first bit Terry but a micrometer will be best so that the wear lip can be avoided which will be impossible with vernier calipers.

A basic far-eastern made micrometer can be picked up very cheaply these days. I think I paid a tenner for mine. Hardly a Moore and Wright but quite adequate for all normal workshop jobs.

The discs should be manufactured with a step in the outer circumference where
it will indicate the minimum thickness on e the disc is worn down to be flush with it.

Otherwise, doesn't the BoL Haynes have a max/min thickness?

The BoL which I have to hand covers Xantia up to N reg, and gives:

Front: New = 20.4mm, & 18.5mm minimum
Rear: New = 9.0mm, & 7.0 minimum

The dimensions for the BOL applies to both Mk1 & Mk2, as this service part has not changed between the series. Do not forget to measure the discs on the outer and inner edges and at about three different places as they NEVER wear equally. As the discs get older, its also worth checking for radial cracks, especially on vented units.
