405 petrol keypad code

Post by davewithington »

A friend of mine has just bought a category "C" 405 without a logbook, which wouldn't be a problem normally, but also he doesn't have the code for the unlocking keypad, so he can't take it for MOT, no MOT, no VOSA inspection so no new logbook.

Does anyone know a way round not having the code, or is he looking to change the ECU?

Look closely at the keypad and you should be able to see which buttons are getting the most use and often it's possible to deduce from there.

I take it he's tried the 0000 and 1111 defaults?

Otherwise it's a case of replacement ECU.

I'd agree you can sometimes tell (if you are lucky) the keycode from the wear on the keys, either the button themselves or the plastic around them.

Having said that, as Jim has said a replacement ECU from the scrapyard should be possible. Is it not possible to contact the DVLA and explain the situation, they may be willing to provide the previous owner details. I do not see this as 'confidential' as if he had the logbook he'd have this information anyway.

Or possibly contact the salvage / insurance company. Its probably worth a few minutes on the phone to a few people.
Andy.

He's phoned the DVLA. A very rude and unhelpful woman explained that it made no difference to them whether he could start the car or not, and refused to help. My acquaintance didn't get her name unfortunately.

No, I think he's looking at a new ECU,just wanted to confirm my thoughts.

That's odd. Last time I called the DVLA about a lost V5C the person on the other end of the phone was most helpful and polite. Couldn’t have asked for better service and the new V5C was with me almost by return of post and no charge as the DVLA admitted their fault - they got my house number wrong...

Maybe I was very lucky?

I'd suggest Jim, "xmexclusive" can probably help.

Not in my experience. I've had to ring them for a couple of times for various things, and always found them helpful and polite. There's something oddly sexy about the Welsh accent too..

I've had the same experience with the Inland revenue, though the chap was merely friendly and helpful, not at all sexy..

I absolutely adore the Welsh accent. And yes, in a woman it's sexy :)

My mam was brought up in Wales and her name was Gladys.
She didn't talk like that though.

I'm of (South) Welsh extraction...

Maybe that's why I have such a strong wish to return there...
