hi all again,
inside my fusebox at the top of the fuses is a small red plastic tab that pulls down about 5mm then stops. does anyone know what this is?
also can anyone tell me the positions of the various relays in the car as i think i might have a couple of dead ones (xantia 97 2.1td).

I'm quite sure you do NOT have a couple of "dead ones" of the relays [:D]
These are indeed very reliable - and a dead relay would either cause lack of random electrical functions - or strange constant working of others.
The red plastic thingy may either be a locking clip for the fuse box - or a fuse removal/insertion utility tool.
