Xantia - noisy aircon pulley

Post by KevMayer »

When my aircon is switched off and the pulley clutch on the compressor isn't pulled in, the pulley makes a metallic whining noise as it freewheels. This gets really loud sometimes. I have checked it many times. It all looks ok so I don't expect it to drop off. But the noise makes the car sound cheap. I switch the aircon on just to stop it. But even so, the aircon comes in and out at low speed, so I suddenly get this horrible metallic noise coming from under the bonnet. I have heard it on other Xantias. Does anyone know what can be done about it, other than change the compressor ?
Cheers, Kev.

Since the noise seems to disappear with A/C load - it points to a frewheel bearing on the compressor axle drive belt wheel.
You may check it with engine off - belt removed. Any bearing should have a very smooth noise free running.
