C5 2.2 dpf or not

Post by cjuk81 »

Hi guys

A simple question, do all mk1 c5 2.2hdi have the dpf fitted? Just I've seen some places on the Internet where someone says there 2.2 has the dpf fitted and people have questioned if it was fitted.

So was it fitted from a certain year, I've seen some nice 2.2s for sale but the dpf issue puts me off a bit.

Thanks

Chris

I'm pretty sure they all had it and it was advertised as some wonderful thing that helped the environment etc but did not actually make tax any cheaper.
On those engines the filter is supposed to be cleaned (or replaced if a uk dealer does it) every 50000 miles and fluid topped up I think at 25000. Could be wrong on the fluid.
I did from 42000 miles to 96000 and the filter was changed at the 50000 service. I never had problems with it.
Work is about 10 miles away and I do some short journeys for work stuff as well. Never had the warning about the filter in danger if clogging.
The anti-pollution faults that come up are rarely to do with the filter. It's sort of a generic message. I was told its because cars are made so that they would rather go into limp mode and flag a fault than put out too much pollution.

I missed my old 2.2 once I had had my 1.6 for a while.
Except for the 2.2 fuel consumption. It was only bothered me when people asked me what it did. About 34.4 to work and back.

Thanks for that reply, 34 mpg doesn't sound thAt good at all, I can get that from my 1.8 petrol Mondeo! I would be buying the c5 to replace my 16year old fiesta, which is super on fuel, about 43mpg for my weekly 150 miles a week for work. Do the 2.0d have a dpf? I've never seen it mentioned

I like the idea of the 2.2d but for the extra power and worse mpg and higher tax I can't see much if an advantage over the 2.0d

It is quite low. Motorways used to be 48 or so. Once had 49.8 I think.
The same work journey in the 1.6 the lowest I've had is about 44.5. Usually about 46.
On the motorway the 1.6 usually about 55 mpg. I think I had it at around 60mpg but it seemed to drop really quick after a few people pulled out in front or road works.

The 2.2 was quieter and smoother. Better at overtaking, not having to change down on motorway.

Mine was 5. I think 6 came later. Mine was an sx so that had dual climate control, auto headlights, auto wipers, 3+ suspension, velour seats, armrest but no lumbar support, cruise control.

My 2.2 does approx 42-45 mpg on my trip to work and back at 40 miles with average speeds at 32mph mostly b roads.

My mileage is at 86k with no faults since buying 2 years ago, only warning was the other week for low Eolys fluid which was topped up the next day. I got the 2.2 for the extra power overtaking is superb from 50 to 70mph never lost speed when hitting the hills with cruise control on.

Get a 16v 2.2 you want regret it just make sure it's a good one. 2.2 comes with goodies like sport suspension and esp/traction control.

I suppose as always driving styles affect mpg. It will be a mk1 that I will be maybe getting, I presume there all 16v. How much is the job to clean the filter out. I've seen a few cars with about 80k on them

Filter should not need cleaning out if car looked after and regenerations are happening ie car not used for 2 mile shop runs everyday.

My one was a 2003 2.2hdi which for me was awesome. I went for the 2.2 for the power for towing, I had to get the Eolys topped up about 65k had 58k on clock when I got it, I took it up to 105k in 3 yrs. It was used for my 45 mile commute when I wanted the comfort, but got the 107 to do the commute because of the economy. I sold it solely because we sold the caravan and the c5 was not being used. It was the most reliable car I ever had, but the current owner has now got problems with dpf issues.

I am considering another c5 soon, wondering about the 1.6 for economy or the 2.0 138hp, probably from around 2006-2007. Because I don't tow any more and drive on single carriageways all the time, and now used to a tiny 1.0 i think a 1.6 would suffice, but I would need a good long run in one before I take the plunge.

It would be used mainly Monday to Friday for me to take to work, that's a 18mile journey each way, a mixture of motorway and A roads, so I'm guessing that would be enough for it to do it regenerations?
