Xantia VSX Estate Project....Now SOLD and SAVED!!

Post by citroenxm »

Hi all..

As you may know, a recent arrival, a Xantia VSX Estate, on a P plate. 1997, with Keypad immobilser and Air Con.

As a brief rundown, work to do on this is as follows, and as the car came in to me..

Rear bumper has been pushed in on the O/s Corner.. also craked on the N/s - REPLACE
Lost her Alloys, but will be sorting that out and gettin proper VSX alloys back on..
Starting issue
Low pressure LHM leak at rear
Drivers Strut top is, well see through!! Wait till I get it off the car! (Got One)
Bonnet crap, have replacment in good order
Drivers door top hinge starting to break away. Also got a door correct colour.
Rear door jambs, surface rust, need a clean down and treating.
Oil and Filter service.
Check cam belt condition and take appropiate action.
Fit set of Front Brake pads. (Got)

Lots of small things really nothing big to do!.

Other areas will have pics taken when I work on them. Things I DO know about the car. During the course of last year, rear spheres were fitted. New set of rear brake pads also fitted.

Anyway.. done two jobs today, sorted the leak, I lowered the rear subframe and the return pipe had popped off a join.. anyway, pushed that back on job done. However, found the subframe mount was a bit iffy. So I took one off the scrap car thats ready to go and to my surprise they are identical! Hatch and estate use the same mounts.

So that bit sorted, the next was starting. After removing the heaters I found two dead. So with a set of 4 working we had a nicely starting car! An XUD will go on 3, but they will never go on two.

So two jobs done, next two are Strut top and front brake pads.

Ay up!

You've got a good starting point there. At least the body looks reasonably straight.

Another good project Paul :) The body looks quite tidy there, will it be a tidy and use or a tidy and sell?

Strut top and front brake pads work today...

With mostly pictures taken too...

Wheel off, car jacked up, undo the top nut a bit then with a piece of wood give it a clout...

Image

Then grip the Nut, and screw out the Piston

Image

Push the piston right down out the bottom of the Strut Top, then lean down on the hub and pull the strut outward, BUT not too far so it doesn't disengage the drive shaft...

Image

Unbolt the 4x 13mm bolts holding the top to the car... and lower it out from under the wing...

And this is what I was presented with:

Good EH???

Anyway, heres the replacment..

I peeled the rubber away to check its condition. Its in virtually perfect order, there IS surface rust yes.. But its NOT rotton. I shall apply some protection etc

Fitted in place, and because its an S2 strut top, we need a spacer for it to fit as the drilling is deeper..

All fitted..

Looking good..

Next up, front brake pads...

Nicely does it, then the next was an absent ABS light on the dash... So after a bit of checking I found that Both front sensors were not being seen...

So after a bit of routing I found a pair of S1 ABS sensors and fitted them... Replaced the bulb only to find the ABS light stayed on solid.. No flicker nothing...

So I connected another ABS ECU and hey presto, the light flickerd and went out... so, ECU swap, which you can on the Tevis one without disturbing the valve block...

Half an hour later.. self test passed.. Tried the car, ABS works fine... Another Tick to the list.

Next to do: Pair of front drop links....

Replace rear bumper
Replace bonnet
replace drivers door.

Nice work Paul, that strut top doesn't look too bad, it probably had another few hours in it

Will you paint the replacement top? I usually take off the rubber covers and paint the tops with a good rust preventing paint. As you know, the rubbers are a bad idea, they are a store for moisture.

It'll be done by the end of tomorrow at this rate

Yes chris, firstly apply some rust cure coat then something like under seal and also underneath the wing too on both sides. The passenger one is virtually new so must have been changed in the past sometime before I even met the car...

What have you done there with the feed input to require an adaptor then
- I recall you asking about opening up a 3.5mm input so what did you fabricate?

Hi Andrew..

I originally did ask about drilling out a 3.5 top, but after digging found a pair of S2 Exclusive Tops that Id bought years ago hidden in the back of the cupboard...

Anyway, for reasons unknown to us all Citroen chose to drill the larger Orface on the Exclusive tops much DEEPER then S1 tops, so this means the need for a spacer so the pipe will tighten up and seal...

That brass one obviously is home made.. I have an Original spacer...

Here are the two together...
