Has my DMF failed...??

Unread post by hamster99 »

Hi All

Am just wondering if the following symptoms suggest that the DMF on my 2.0HDI 138 has gone south....

1. When idling there is a metallic rumbling/drumming noise from the back of the engine bay which doesn't seem to affect the idling of the engine
2. When I dip the clutch the engine revs falter slightly and there is a noise which in previous cars was related to a dodgy release bearing
3. When I select any gear I get a horrendous whirring noise (and it's difficult to engage the gears) and the engine speed drops off to the point of almost stalling
4. Significant vibration on take up when first pulling away (nightmare in stop start traffic!)
5. Lumpy engine vibration when switching off
6. Heavy clutch pedal.
7. It was a bit noisy before but has got considerably worse in the past few hundred miles (fine on motorways but difficult to drive around town)

Cheers

Those are the sort of symptoms my mate was getting on his (see your other thread). TBH if you are going to the trouble of having the box out it's probably worth the extra cost of the fitting a new one unless you are sure it is good. You don't really want to to have to do it all over again a few weeks later! You can I believe test them in situ once the box is off, but not sure this is DIY as you need some specialist gear. My mates was obviously shot though - there was a lot of play in the centre part, and aluminium dust dropping out of the bottom. Note that there is quite a lot of rotational play in a new DMF, so don't be confused by that! How many miles has it done (not that that is any indicator - citroenmad had a new DMF on his at 30k miles... #-o )?

My C5 2.0 HDI screamed like a stuck pig and whined through all the gears but it was just the clutch release bearing so you might be lucky.

It does sound like it could be the DMF failing, the vibration is a tell tale sign. There is no clutch slip under hard acceleraion in high gears but at low revs? Typically 2000rpm in 5th and 6th?

I don't seem to get any clutch slip at all whatever the gear or revs! Could it possibly be something other than the DMF?

You don't need to get any clutch slip at all for the dmf to fail

Dual mass flywheel. It's essentially a vibration damper, the flywheel's made in two parts with springs separating them.
