ABS light not coming on... MOT fail!

Post by ed4ferrets »

Hi just wondering if anyone has had this problem where the ABS self test light does not illuminate?

Also on a Xantia S2 '99 model at what stage should the light come on i.e. before (ignition on) or after engine has started?

cheers

It should come on with the ignition switch and go off after the engine has started.

Yep, just because it's not coming on doesn't mean someone has removed the bulb to hide the fact the
system is in trouble! Recently my Xm didn't show a light which got an MOT fail and it turned out to be
a duff bulb. That's not to say there may be more hidden by the missing warning light.

There's no power in the circuit at all which is odd as the point of the warning light is to cut to indicate
the system is in fail safe in such an event. Like Malcolm says, it is supposed to be fitted with ABS! lol

also checked the ABS fuse which according to BOL is fuse number 6.

sadly the fuse is in excellent health so the mystery deepens further :?

unfortunately the situation is URGENT as I need to MOT, insure and tax the car in order to drive to Scotland at sparrow fart on Wednesday #-o

What happens if you unplug the big connector to the ABS ECU ? Normally that would trigger the ABS warning light to come on permanently, from memory...

Simon assuming it did go on would the light then go out again when plugging the connector back in? Don't want to exchange one problem for another for mot purposes

The point of unplugging it is to try to test the wiring to the light, as the light should come on if the ABS ECU is not working.

Another question is, does the ABS actually work ? If you brake hard, (somewhere where it's safe of course) do you feel the brakes pulsing or do the wheels just lock up ?

At the moment we don't know if we just have a fault with the indicator light or wiring or whether the ABS is completely non functional.

If there is a forum member nearby with a Lexia it might be worth your while getting it tested on that as not only will that test and talk to the ABS ECU, it should have a way to manually operate the warning light.

Yes Lexia does have the facility to test the ABS light.

i think if the ABS fuse was blown the lamp will light to indicate a fault,

my X boss had this on a BX we fitted a new fuse on that car it was No. 14, and the light operated as it should,
till weeks later after an emergency stop when it popped the fuse again, obviously a fault in the ABS unit caused the fuse to blow,

you still have not said if you are sure your car has ABS
