Peugeot 205 - What happens if the timingbelt breaks?

Post by johannes2k »

Hello guys!

What happens if the timingbelt/cambelt breaks on a Peugeot 205 with an 1.4L 80HP engine?

Can I just put on a new belt and go?

hi and welcome

probably not but you could try it,

its not the end of the world if it does have bent valves as these heads are very easy to remove re/fit,
dont even need to take the O/S/F wheel off as you can do the hole job from under the bonnet

Yes as above, I don't think the TU would survive a belt breakage unless you were very lucky indeed. You'd end up with a selection of bent valves as Malcolm has said.

If you just put a new belt on "as is" assuming you could get it timed it would probably run on two or three cylinders due to the bent valve.

The TU is the only Peugeot engine that I have known to survive, but that was very early 1.1 carb` engines. As said its so simple to just slip a new belt on and give it a try? as its a TU you can just fit the cam belt and start it up with out fitting anything else back on.If it is running on two or three the TU engine has got to be the most simple head job in the trade.

Oh agree its a simple engine, I do prefer the cast block ones (1.6 only?) though not really keen on the liner units seems like more work having to clamp them before turning the crank (I've always done that although if anything would move if I did not, not sure never tried) :)

its simple enough to clamp the liners i have a length of flat bar which i place diagonally across the block , and bolt down at each end,

i would not fancy rotating the engine without clamping the liners as you really dont want them to move, because they have such a fine sealing ring/O ring that really does not want disturbing
