I would be very dubious about running standard clear PVC pipe across the top of the engine for the pump inlet, that type of material will soften greatly with heat from the engine, and being under suction the pipe may collapse, starving the pump of oil. Any hydraulic pipe used under suction must either be very thick walled or have a reinforced wall that is designed not to collapse under suction.
It shouldn't really be too hard to find proper mineral oil resistant hydraulic pipe - its used on tractor hydraulics and just about any machine with hydraulics, that's what I replaced the pipe from the tank to the pump with on my previous Xantia:
There are two different sizes, the attachment at the tank end is larger than the pump end, so I used two different diameter pipes and joined them with a fitting using jubilee hose clamps:
While the PVC pipe might work for a while, its not a suitable long term replacement.
