2001 C5 110 Hdi

Post by carpy »

After spending hours and hours fixing many problems on my C5 I just cant get the cooling fan working. I changed the sensor at the side of the engine, I've checked the wiring by the rad and there are no breaks, the fan spins and will run when connected to a battery, The fan wont run when the aircon is switched on. If I run the engine for ages (ticking over for an hour) it gets really hot, pipes and rad too hot too touch but the temp gauge never moves over half way. Pretty much at wits end, any help please.

I think your system might be behaving normally. The cooling system is very efficient on these engines, I don't think I've ever heard the fans running on our one in five years- and that includes towing a caravan. I've never seen the needle climb either. We rarely use the A/C but I'm fairly sure the fan doesn't run when we do turn it on- ours is the LX with the basic version of the A/C.

Something I have meant to look into for years and never got a round tuit.

I'm off out shortly so will endeavour to see how it works with mine, I don't think I have ever seen or heard the fan running.

Yep, runs with aircon on, not with it off.
Unless it gets hot enough, presumably.

I did have a duff sensor that would often tell me on startup (stone cold engine) that the coolant was overheated, once or twice turned the aircon off by itself.
It always recovered after a few moments but was partially responsible for poor performance.

Cooling fan should definitely work with A/C on, but if yours isn't gassed up, then it wont . Best bet is to get it on a Lexia, and see if you can actuate the fan .
There are a few different systems on these and lots of potential issues. Some vehicles have an ecu built into the fan body. To many variations to be guessing really.

Re: 2001 C5 110 Hdi Fan Issue

There is no ecu on the fan, just the motor. Would no gas in the aircon somehow stop the fan working at all until the system is regassed. Sounds daft I know but it is french electrics. If I stick the green sensor in the side of the engine into a pan of boiling water would that make the system think it was too hot and start the fan, just a thought

That should make the fan work, difficult to do in practice though. The A/C having no gas will to stop the fan from working due to engine temp.
