Giant Caterpillar...

Post by CitroJim »

Xac and I saw this monster crawling along a paving slab by my conservatory door this afternoon.
EEK!
EEK!
It's got to be a good two and a half inches long and a good half-inch in diameter..

Any idea what it is?

Xac thinks a big moth perhaps, or a bat?

I'm not saying they did as they're really fussy eaters my two...

I hope they didn't as those moths look rather lovely...

The Elephant Hawk hasnt done too well this year with numbers down all over the country due to the bad summer. In fact, its been one of the worst mothing years ever recorded with most species in great decline. Ive never known anything like it in 40 years of running moth traps.I can only pray things get better next year. By the way, i only record and release, dont kill and set them.

Funny you should say that Steve, just put £25 worth of petrol in Siany's car after she came round to see me running on vapours...

Mothman, thanks for all the moth info. I hope the one we saw matures into a fruitful moth. Indeed, now you say, I've seen very few moths this year...

That's disgusting.

I fear nothing in life apart from moths. I am petrified of the damn things. I can't be in the same room as one.

I have the same problem with wasps. I'm unreasonably terrified of them...

Most creepy crawlies I have no problem with at all but show me a wasp and I'll run...

Many moons ago, an ex of mine borrowed one of those cheap and nasty sun beds, it was bloody hot so the window had to be open when it was in use.
So imagine using it at night, it turned into one of those bug zappers but without the zap and anyone using it would be covered in moths if they didn't keep twitching.
My own phobia is of plasters.
