Greetings all
Well... First long distance trip to Cornwall and it was running perfectly until...
The clutch has started slipping quite badly. Engages all gears and 'creeps' as it should but it can't handle any steep inclines in 'A' and it will crawl very slowly in first as long as I don't floor the throttle.
Any thoughts? Is the clutch on an auto a nightmare job?
In two minds at the moment as to whether I attempt the journey home (it's okay on slight inclines although not sure how it'll cope on those steep stretches of A30) or just call the AA when the time comes to go home...
Your advice, as always, appreciated!
James

Re: Autobox clutch slip (85 Prestige)
I feel ill reading this as I've just weighed in two 2.5 autos with perfect autoboxes last week.
It's an engine out job swapping it although it's actually not that bad a job.

So here's how it went... Bought a litre of gearbox oil and poured in half going through the usual procedures.
Made no difference on the 4 mile test drive to Land's End.
On the return to the camp site I'm staying at (which is at the top of a 1 in 4 hill), I started ascending the hill and was going nowhere, gearbox slipping like hell.
So I tried flooring it. A last chance effort, if you like.
It made the most camp sounding 'whooping' noise, clunked, something bit and it went flying up the hill. And a brief half mile to the site saw it behaving perfectly normal.
I'm leaving it for the night so I'll see how things are in the morning. I'll be stunned if it's fixed itself. I'm now sat in my camping chair watching it tick itself to sleep in the dusk light.
All part of the adventure of driving a car that's been sat for so long I suppose, despite it having all the fluids replaced in preparation for this 'test run'.
Maybe it's just getting used to being driven again. Or maybe the gearbox is broken. We'll see...
Lucky I don't have to be anywhere until Monday

Well... Rather like Marty McFly in Back to the Future, I've just had to push the old girl into a field on the St Just to St Ives road and walk the three miles into 'Hill Valley' - in this case St Ives, where I'm now drinking coffee and contemplating.
Lost all forward gears but still have reverse. Can't say I fancy reversing all the way up the M5!
It was magnificent whilst it lasted - a fantastic road trip with lots of great photos to show you when I get home.
New gearbox will be fitted thanks to the Westons in South Glos. Now... time to call the AA!
