Removing the rear subframe off a Xantia Estate

Unread post by gadgetgricey »

Looking at trying to get this done over the next couple of days, but just wondered where these mystical four bolts are :-D

Done a search and aware I have to disconnect the rear height connector rods first, but then not sure if the bolts are accessed from above within the car, or underneath?

Any help/advice would be great.

Thanks

Dave, very easy :-D

Four bolts, two ones with big washers can be found just forward of the rear wheel arches and the other two at the back into the boot floor effectively that go into the sandwich mounts.

Simply disconnect the HC linkage and chop through all the hydraulic pipes on the Left hand side. Then support the subframe on two trolley jacks and undo the four bolts. gently lower on the jacks and that's it. gave over...

You need help as the subframe is really rather heavy for one.

So axle stands under the car (obviously not on the subframe  ) with enough height so wheels off the ground.

Disconnect the H/C rods and the pipes.

Trolley jacks under the subframe.

Undo the bolts and lower subframe away, and withdraw from rear of car.

Give that a try later.

Thanks again

After placing on sill stands and removing rear road wheels, remove the spare wheel and cradle, then the rear muffler/centre pipe.

Now prise downwards the "tray" carrying all the LHM lines to the front. Cut the lines well forward of the subframe.

Disengage the rod/spring connecting the height corrector to the cabin lever.

Once the front bolts were out, I'd refit the road wheels if the back is sufficiently high to clear, then remove the rear two bolts and wheel out the subframe.

This was for someone scrapping a car. otherwise undo them at the unions, depending on access it might be easier to lower the subframe to undo the pipes...

not done a XANT one but if its like a BX one, you need a length of timber on the jack with the ends under the sub frame so it comes away square,

the BX sub frame has studs going up into the floor this is why it has to come down square so none of the studs catch up

I cringed at the line... cut through the hydraulic lines... there's enough flex in the pipes to lower the frame first.. shame to cut pipes when they can be saved if they are good...

there's only four front to back pipes Dave plus a low return soft pipe...

had a good few frames off now.. one more to go hopefully on Thursday...
