Hi I have a clunk frony o/s could it be bottom ball joint

Post by jimmydod »

Hi All
MOT time again had terrible clunking from o/s suspension front wheel, investigated and found wishbone bushes very worn replace front and rear wishbone bushes, still have a much reduced clunk going over rough roads unable to detect any wear by putting a load upwards using a trolley jack and trying to move wheel no movement dissernable. I also tried to find any movement in brake caliper slider but found none. I need to buy some spare nyloc nuts does anybody know the diameter and pitch of the ball joint nut.
Reagards and best wishes to all Jim

Hi there,

First off what car is it?

It may be worth looking at your anti roll bar drop links, they can also cause a knock over rough ground.

Regarding the bottom ball joint nuts and bolts, they're almost certainly M10x1.5 (i.e. coarse threaded). That's what they were on my ZX, can't see why they'd be much different anywhere else. I would recommend buying a bag of assorted nuts and bolts from Namrick, you get a heck of a lot of bits and pieces including nylocs and split washers for not a huge amount of money.

I had the same problem with our Series 2 HDi Exclusive...

Everything was replaced but the bottom ball joints. When I was doing a wheel bearing I replaced that bottom ball joint and the difference it made to the noises coming from the car were amazing!

They are a nightmare to get out of the hub but well worth changing!

Get onto Plaiedes - they will make up some new pipes in Cunifer and send them out - much easier than trying to fit steel ones! By the looks of it, yes they go up to the ABS block. No doubt they will be a pig to replace, but have a natter with Martin at Plaiedes and he might have some tips.

Hi All

Well I did the flexible brake pipes on front and brake lines iether side from flexi to ABS. The suggestion made to ring Martin at Pliades was excellent they made them up, (I had to check the type of ends first as Citroen being Citroen they used different ones at times) Ordered friday afternoon delivered sat afternoon both fitted by dark. A true pig of a job do to poor access behind engine. Most grateful for the suggestion to approach Martin. Car passed MOT but I noticed that n/s steering rack boot has split, next job o joy of joys.

Regards and best wishes to all
