DW8 1.9 W reg 206 eating fan belts

Post by 1.9inside »

Now then,

my 206 runs the DW8 1.9 non turbo and has done 110k. she runs well but for the past 10 thousand miles she has started to eat aux belts. at first i thought nowt of changing belt on it but it lasted 2000 mile before shredding. I fitted another after checking the pulleys to make sure there were no sharp edges or anything that would cause the problem. when changing the belt i noticed there was massive amount of belt dust all over the alternator and front arms and sump as if it had bin rubbing against itself. how ever fitted it again and checked and i can not see anywhere where the belt could rub. its had a new belt tensioner fitted as i know them plastic pulleys like the chip and crack but who ever did this as rounded of the allan head bolt so fitting belts now is a pain as i risk cracking it using leaver to take the tension off.

anyone got any ideas as to why it would be shredding belts as its got me stumped, or maybe an easier way to fit the belt. like i say i have checked the pulleys and i just cant see how its damaging the belts so quickly.

If you look down on the belt from above, it is likely that the tensioner pulleys not straight due to wear, this in turn forces the belt to ride off the edge of the other pulleys, and shreds the edge of it. Replacing the tensioner should address the problem.

hmm i think that may be the way to go how ever check the condition of the belt regular and when its ticking over i cant see the belt riding off any of the pulleys when the belts shred they have always shredded down the middle

I agree, sounds like one of the pulley`s is out of line?? Also have a look at the crankshaft pulley,if it is the one with a metal spring damper affair check it out.I`ve had lots of those brake up and throw the belt off.

Agree on the spring assembly / bush on these. They can be a pain to change too. Some 406's (actually I think all 2.1's with A/C springs to mind) had this setup, the 1.9's seemed to vary.

thanks for the info no the crankshaft pulley doesnt have a damper. hmm i had it on a ramp again today at work and i still couldnt see out obvious but what your saying about them being out of line is the only thing that seems to give an explanation to it. i think it will have to go to the garage it goes to for them to have a look as i only fix ride on lawn mowers and such like and i have never had as much trouble with a belt on one of them as to this one on me car haha. but yeah thanks for info and will go see the garage 2mora and see what they say.

have you cleaned all the pulleys thorougly and checked for bits of old belts melted to them? I had all sorts of problems with an MX-5 throwing belts off and snapping them, it turned out to be crud in the V of the pulleys..

yeah i checked each one and blew each one clean with an airline and felt for any sharp edges and its just had a new aircon compressor on so thats a new pully which only leaves 3 others and they all seem to be fine.

Just had a thought? Has the car had a new power steering pump fitted before this belt issue??

no the car has the original pump on it how ever it has had a new air con compressor on tho it was doing it before iout that on. the garage have put a longer belt on as even they couldnt get the belt i put on back on so they think the belts have bin so tight there eating them selves so guna run her for a while and if not then all the pulley's need replacing so she will have to go.
