You only have to look at the new Alfas and you can see there just Astras in drag  The 159 was a beauty but these newer Alfstra Romeos aren't for me .

This speculation has been around for a while and discussed elswhere (French car chat?). I think Rüsselsheim built SAAB 9-3s so will have gaps, and GM will surely have to sort out Vauxhall/Opel branding and range line up which will create more gaps somewhere in the mighty machine.

GM started a joint venture with SAAB, which became a takeover, then seemed to get all the IP and brand assets USA owned. SAAB notionally made no profit for years, but I bet paid the GM parent handsomly for licences. It ended up with dead SAAB, 'one less competitor'.

If PSA do go into this sort of venture, I give them 10 years max before they cease to exist.

French Unions are strong, President Hollande is no lover of Merkel-onomics and will be reluctant to export jobs, It might even still be the case that the Government are shareholders in PSA and would find it hard to stay out of the fight. France is good at doing all it can to protect French industry and staying (just) within the EU rules. Maybe it won't happen.

If it does, quo vadis? Might have to look to the East for slightly eccentric big cars.

Seeing the photo of the alleged new C5 just shows how so boringly alike modern cars are now. It's hard to tell them apart or to see any individuality in them.

I had to inwardly giggle today when I parked the XM amongst a mass of carbon-copy drearily-alike and dull moderns at a motorway services. It looked like a spaceship had landed amongst them...

Its stunning how well they stand out! I soooooooooooooo NEEED to get my SED finished. Its starting to get to me now, every time I have time, someone breaks their car!

I again need to drop the rear subframe off the SED to weld to a much lesser extent a hole in the rear subframe mounting area.

The French regard their motor industry as both a matter of national pride and as a vital part of the economy. Successive French governments supported PSA in defiance of EEC/EU rules. It's unthinkable for senior French politicians or diplomats to be seen being chauffeured in a foreign car; the C6 made no sense without a steady government market for them - and even then has been a consistent loss-maker.

Not for nothing is the word Chauvanism french.
