XM Gurus..

Post by Chris570 »

A few things please

There is a rattle on the o/s/r that i've tracked down to be a loose washer on the bolt from the ARB onto the arm (18mm head) I've tried to do the bolt up but i can't shift it, i've not give it any serious abuse yet but is this bolt a troublesome one or am I ok to not be a school girl and get the big bar out....

Also my cruise doesnt work but i've got no voltage to pin9 which from what i can see comes via a relay ( brake pedal contacts are now ok) where is this relay?

One last thing, the rear brake pads rattle a little bit (just had new pads and discs fitted) I presume that once they've worn a bit they'll be ok?

Cheers

You will probably find that the drop link needs replacing, they wear for a pastime. Give the threads a good wire brush and some oil before you try to undo them, if the stud goes round with the nut, put some stress on the joints by jacking up or lowering the side you are trying to undo, if that doesn't work use a crowbar to load it. Once you have the nuts off they are quite easy to change.

Can't help with the cruise I'm afraid, none of mine had it.

do XM's have drop links on the rear anti roll bars then,

rear pads maybe cheap aftermarket pads were fitted which are not quite tight enough in the calipers,

otherwise the end of the calipers were the pads run are worn with age allowing the pads to rock end to end

Lol.. I thought that too malc.no drop links on the rear at all... the rattle is the anti roll bar however chris its a captive nut and can shear off inside the arm.. this happend on my v6 Sei and ive not sorted it. Im having to resort to changing the whole aubframe as by the time it gets to a rattle its toooo late.. threads buggered..

as for pads.. was the U ahaped spring that tensions on the pad bolt re fitted?? its the only thing that stops them rattleing.. it sounds like one has been left out...

the relay on s1 cars is sitting on the front of the ecu box with a few others.. useually next to the silver cruise box.. Not certain on late s2 cars though... sorry..

With something as quiet as an s2 esj engine it will annoy the pants off you.. it would me and did me with a Prv S1... a subframe change is not hard.. only four bolts to get the frame off and 5 pipes to disconnect... plus the height lever rod plus remove the exhaust..

Seems a bit extreme swapping a rear subframe because the trailing arm has got a duff thread Paul?
The arm is easy enough to swap over if a bit time consuming though. I've known these ARB bolts snap
on Cx 's but not Xm or Xantiae.

The cruise relay is probably violet in colour, if that helps narrow your search.

I've found the cruise relay now :)

as for the rear ARB i suspect that it may be a carefully remove and retap job

Good. It should latch on with a quiet click when you are driving and press the "Cruise" pushbutton.

Mine occasionally doesn't work - it's the footswitch contacts suffering light oxidisation.
