Current car a manual but for 6 years before that had auto. No trouble, never really thought about it. just drive it up slowly onto the ramp and apply the footbrake. At that speed auto = first anyway.

An automatic is easier to drive up ramps by far. I keep the drivers door open and watch the front wheel under the door, gently apply throttle until it starts climbing the ramp, keep your left foot ready on the brake, when it reaches the top it will try zoom away, hit the foot brake but keep a bit of throttle on, then ease the brake off slightly to slowly ease it along until the wheel touches the end stop.

If its a Xantia you'll also want to be lifting the suspension to the intermediate height position before driving up the ramps - unless they're an extended reach shallow ramp or have a separate shallow starter ramp the front bumpers will scrape on the ramp on the way up! (Don't forget to raise the suspension before going back down again too...)

PS drive or 1st makes no difference, it will be in 1st no matter what! Just make sure the gearbox is not in snow mode, or it will be in 2nd and you won't get up the ramp
