Xantia Front Struts Removed - Any good??

Unread post by gadgetgricey »

Well finally got the front struts off the Xantia I was breaking, but not sure if they are any good?

Also I learned the hard way regarding removing the drive shaft nut, so that's still attached to the first one I removed .

Was planning on selling them, but if they are both poor, dont want the hassle of striping them down

Both removed from a Xantia 110 Hdi Estate.

Link to pictures here

Opinions please.

Thanks

the strut tops look cream crackerd but that doesnt mean the truts them selves are not useable or even the hubs and drive shafts

Dave, do not scrap the strut tops. I'll 'ave 'em, as I am amassing a collection of these to be repaired by my 'rubberman' here in the UK. Already have a couple of samples on test and they seem to be working OK. Still looking for a C5 version, in any condition.

Front struts rarely give any trouble, even on higher mileage cars.

Ay up!

How much for a pair of Xantia tops, and is DIY fitting an option?

Strut tops are fairly easy to change.. and fairly DIY able with a bit of Citroen knowledge...

Ive a few Xantia TOPS in bad state that need to goto a re furb to hold a stock of tops. I dont bin any of them..

Dave, its not that TOP side thats as important as the side you didnt take many pics of.. Its the rubber on the under side where the strut BOOT attaches under the top thats important, its its started to split then they are bad... The metal plates still look reletavly OK.. Yes NOT perfect, those are some of the worse S2 tops ive seen so far. But some pics of the "Under Side" would be good...

Must admit did not realise the top bits were removable   .

Wife's Birthday tomorrow, so doubt I'll be able to get the spanners out, but will try and have a look Friday, and get some additional pics.

Thanks again all.

although the base plate can fail all the tops i have seen let go its been the domed section above the inner wing that has broken,
as in one of those picy's the dome is breaking up

And its the rubber underside that tells all.. you can see the rubber seperate from the base plate which eventually allows them to pass each other..

my xm stops were in a bad way. should make a sticky post on it.. the base plates were fine but the rubber under the bottom side where the strut connects was pushing out downwards as lookong up under the wing..

the result when i took it off the car was scarey...
