replacing turbo on C8

Post by gazzac8 »

hi all new to this forum im after a bit of advice regarding my C8 2.2 hdi 2006 model just found out the turbo is knackered by a garage only had the car 2months, they want £1200 to do the work which i cant afford i can buy the turbo reconditioned for a decent price but not afford the price they want.

so i am going replace the turbo myself. im mechanically minded and have messed about with cars in past but im new to this car so just wondering if anybody has ever changed one as an heads up to what i have to remove to access the turbo its self i know its not going to be a walk in the park but i have another car i can use for time being, so it doesnt matter how long it takes.

thanks for any advice given

Horendous job, will, take you lots of days at home.
You will need to remove the OS driveshaft, lower engine mount, exhaust down pipe.
There is a bit of exhaust that comes off the Turbo, that is squashed flat to go over the steering rack or some other part, this is a bitch to get off as the bolts will be seized solid.
The Turbo is unlikely to bolt off the manifold, as one of the bolts is quite inaccessible, and so you will need to,remove the whole manifold .
This entails removing the EGR heat exchanger thingy, and the clips that hold it together are awful even with the correct clip pliers .
Once you get the exhaust manifold and turbo off in one lump, spilt the turbo off andyou can bolt the manifold back on, and fit the turbo secondly, this is the easiest way .
One VERY important thing, if the turbo has spewed oil into, the inlet system and inter cooler, you must clean it all out, as if not you risk the engine running on this oil, and it will rev up out of control, possibly blowing itself to bits.
Sorry to be so negative, but it is truley a bad job, and you will see why the garage charges £1200.
We do em for about 1K usually
You will need a very good set of quality tools, to get some of the bolts undone.

Hello, out of interest, whats wrong with your turbo?

I know nothing about cars, but I had a 2.2 136 C5 that went into limp mode with anti-polution fault and esp/asr deactivated.
I took it to a Dealer, who diagnosed the turbo had failed and it was around £1200 to put a new one in.
The mechanic told me they replaced lots of turbos on C8s with the same engine and same fault so he was sure its what was needed. He said the fault (boost pressure too high) was caused by the Eolys fluid cloggin the turbo.
I was due to get married and could not afford it, so we put it off
In the mean time I looked for local places that could try cleaning the turbo, eventualy found a Citroen specialist who said he could do it.
Got a phonecall to say that after looking at it there was nothing wrong with the turbo. It was actually a faulty electro valve.
Once replaced it was fine again.

Good advice above, usually if the turbo is failed it is very obvious, ie lots of smoke and noise .
