automatic xantia

Just a quickie guys ,
i am driving an M reg xantia petrol COURTESEY car automatic whilst my own gets a steering rack leak fixed.

have never had an auto and have driven along the motorway in D (drive) , but what are the 1,2,3 positions for ??
silly question perhaps but last time i was in an auto was in new york driving to niagra falls 6 yrs ago in a rental car .

I believe they are for locking the box into those gear, for steep hills and and snow and stuff.

Position 1 is to stay in first gear.
2 is to use first and second gears, and it will shift up and down between them by itself.
3 is to use the three lower gears while preventing shifting to fourth gear.
Say that 3 is to use in town and D on the roads.
