Chaps.. my netbook has stopped working.. and in the mean time I want to copy files from its HD to my main home PC - where I am admin I believe

as expected, the folder users/john on the (now external drive) is locked to me .. any ideas? tried sharing it etc but no luck.

I know I used to put a password into the netbook, alongside my user name at login..

Should be able to go to the folder tree with John in it, right click, go to security and click take ownership. Use an account with admin privileges to do this.

having read the first couple of paras from that link, I can see now why security tab didnt seem to be present last night..

Start Windows XP Home Edition in safe mode
If you are running Windows XP Home Edition, you must start the computer in safe mode, and then log on with an account that has administrative rights in order to access the Security tab. Access to the Security tab is required in order to change security permission. If you are running Windows XP Professional, you do not have to start the computer in safe mode
