C4 rear springs

I need to change a rear coil spring on our c4 hatch (2005) and wondered how you get the old spring out? I have spring compressors etc, do I need to unbolt the top of the damper on both sides to let the rear axle down further?

With the vehicle up on stands, all you need to do is to place a jack under the rear arm remove the shock absorber lower bolt on both sides and lower the arm, the springs come out without using spring compressors.
