Failed front lower ball joint boots

Post by cox377 »

Hello guys,

My motor failed the MOT on both front lower suspension ball joint boots. I assumed this was a case of changing both ball joints but the MOT guy told me they just replace the boots.

Has anyone done this, and on a 406?

I'm not 100% sure the boots are available. The joints themselves screw in / out of the hub although you need a tool ideally to do them, a kind of socket with some pegs in it, 405's are the same but a different size / tool size.

I was also not aware you could actually fail a ball joint for having a split boot, obviously CV outer joints (I don't think they can fail the inner) as long as there was no play in the ball joint. Having said that if the boot is split it will rapidly attract dirt and wear quickly so it may well be they changed it or I have forgotten.

I'd never really been aware of them before although I'd not really thought about them given the lowish cost of a ball joint, at least where the joint is available separately from its attachment. :)

I would expect that if its been running with split boots the ball joint will be dry and on its way out anyway. As said the ball joint is very cheep and easy to replace so why go to the bother, remember that ball joint is a critical safety part.

James dont you have spare hub's/struts laying about , if the swivel joint is ok you might just be able to take the boots from you spares and put them on the one's on the car,

easy peasy except the clips can be fiddly

I put new ones on the Activa's rear droplink with lots of grease, aftermarket boots are a lifesaver if the joint is still nice and tight.

Hello Malcolm,

I looked under one of the donner cars last night and thought cricky there can't be much to changing one of these boots. I'm just trying to source some new boots and work out the size I need etc. I tried calling you the other day to see if you have the ball joint removing tool for these ****ers or a price for changing them over.

Regarding the joints being on their way out, your right that they could no doubt do with being replaced.

Hope all is well.
