was on the point of ordering a cam belt kit for my 2001 306 diesel DW8, but first looked on youtube for tutorial,
found one, but for the XUd engine, thought it cant be very different !!!
but having spent all afternoon trying to locate flywheel locking hole, it was supposed to be below the starter motor,
but have looked every where, all i can see is a slot through which i can see the flywheel teeth, but no 8mm hole to lock it, am i missing something ???
would be grateful for any info regarding the difference in procedure for the 2 engines.

You lock the flywheel with a 6mm rod on both the XUD and the DW8. Look behind the starter rather than below it. One other difference between the two is that the XUD has a large crank bolt; the DW8's pulley is held by three small bolts. And the other big difference is that the XUD has a self adjusting cambelt, the DW8's belt has to be adjusted manually, The camshaft and pump pulleys on both engines are fixed with pins but on the DW8 there are three slotted holes to play with.

ok, thanks for that, can the hole be seen or only felt with the 6mm rod, and how long does it need to be ?

The hole is difficult to see. A mirror can help. I find a 6mm rod, bent to shape and longer than the starter motor is best.

The hole is between the starter and the block. Maybe a little below the narrowest point.

If you cannot see it disconnect the battery and then remove the three bolts holding the starter in place, it should move (without disconnecting the electrics) an inch or so to the left to give you room to see.
I had to do this on my 205 as the pattern starter someone had previously fitted had a larger body / solenoid so it was not possible to actually get the real PSA tool in.

ok, thanks for that.
how about adjusting the belt tension, it sounds very complicated on this engine, with the use of specialist tools.
is it possible to do without the special tool ? the XUD unit seems easy, but he the DW8 very complicated, is it beyond a DIY job ?

Not at all. If you can do an XUD, you can do the DW. True, the DW's belt doesn't self-adjust but if you haven't got a tension gauge you can do the finger & thumb 90degree twist on the longest stretch. At least on the DW you won't have to fight the crank pulley bolt. If you don't have one, I would try to borrow a Haynes manual with the DW engine in it. The Xsara No3751 is one.sorede66 wrote: is it beyond a DIY job ?

Re: peugeot 306 diesel 2001 DW8 cam belt change
ordered the parts and have now fitted the cam belt, though have not started the engine yet !!
mainly due to problem fitting the new Aux belt.
when i released the eccentric tensioner it appeared to release a hell a lot of tension, didn't think much about it until i came to refit the new belt,
even with the eccentric tensioner pulley in the smallest position the belt will not go on, despite all efforts, 2 days now !!!
checked out the Dynamic tensioner roller just above the eccentric tensioner, but cant see if it is adjustable or not, question, is this roller fixed, or does it link to the large spring that attaches to the power steering pump ? and do i have to turn something to move the Dynamic tensioner roller.
am at a complete loss ????
thanks in advance
