I think I got a new dream car, 505!

Post by nametooshort »

I think I just got a new ambition in life.

As some people may know, I have a reasonable collection of classic junk, I own or have owned a lot of the 'usual' classics from the 1960s and 70s, like all together I think I have or had every type of aircooled VW, and etc, and also some very rare cars, they are cool and stuff, don't get me wrong, but since I had my character-forming first decade of existence in the 1990s, I always secretly liked the ugly-ass square Euro cars of the 1980s, hence my fascination with Passats and Cromas and stuff like that.

When I saw the 305 for the first time, I didn't know anything about Pugs at all, except that a few of my buddies had classic 205 GTis which I had absolutely no enthusiasm for (I don't really like small hatch GTI cars of any brand, they are not as fast as people think, and I don't like really small cars). But as soon as I saw this 305 wagon, i decided that I absolutely must have one of these, because its the ugliest large 1980s euro stationwagon I have ever seen, compared to it a Passat I or II looks like a civilized car, so I bought it, and so far I am really happy with my purchase. I drive it more then my much 'cooler' old cars! It looks ugly, is full of dents, sounds like a truck, and is basically pretty much when the zombie Apocalypse happens its the car to have.

But some months back I encountered something which is EVEN bigger/uglier then my 305, but I didn't get a look at it enough to identify what it was, until I was flicking through some old car manuals which I have (since I don't sleep, I read old car manuals in my spare time), and all of a sudden realized. That thing...that ultimate example of bland 1980s euro large car ugliness, was in fact a 505!

So now I decided that I NEED a 505, and a wagon preferably (since I always carry a lot of stuff, most of the cars I like are wagons).

I see they are pretty much non-existant on ebay US or UK, but there are a few on ebay.fr, and I bet it would not be too hard to find a specimen if I look in the right places.

Does anybody know anything about these cars? Whats good/bad about them, what about the engine/model range, any particular issues to look for, etc etc?

Why couldn't I just stick to beetles

What country would you be keeping it in?

Some of the better surviving examples may be found here, but ranks are thinning fast. They are popular imports to Egypt for tourist taxis due to their size and durability.

In-car visibility is good, so driving side won't be a concern either way.

I can keep it either in the UK or in the US, depending on where I find one etc.

The whole drive side thing doesn't really matter much. I am one of those freaky people that's fully ambidextrous, because of this I can drive a left-drive or right-drive car in any country without any issues. To be honest I often don't even know which side is which (but maybe its not a good idea to say that out loud lol ).

Buy one in Australia, then, and send it to the US. It'll be mostly rust free. I can point you at a specialist car importer (to CA) if you need one.

Australia has UK-side drive cars mainly, right? I never been there.

Sounds like something to plan towards then. Unfortunately I will probably be busy off the clock for a few months, but I will look into it. I definitely need to find one of these eventually.
