CX25 GTi Auto - tappets query

Unread post by minijohn »

Hello everyone.
I've just bought my first CX (that seems to imply there will be more?)
I have a query about the tappets & I wonder if anyone can help.

My engine sounds tappety and I'm about to check the clearances. Using a screwdriver as a stethoscope, the noise seems to be coming from just behind the camshaft pulley rather than the rocker cover area.
The Haynes manual says that if the engine sounds tappety after adjustment, then the camshaft extension bearing may need re-adjusting.

Can anyone explain to me how that can be - surely the camshaft is fixed in position by 3 bearings - they're not adjustable or moveable - I don't get it.

Thanks in advance

Haynes have taken that from the factory manual and it is correct, however, depending on mileage and general servicing ETC... The rocker arms can and do wear; in effect the clearance is being adjusted using a thickness checker that is wider than the wear band (width of the valve stem) in the rocker arm and can be the more likely cause of the noise; as it doesn't allow for the hollow in the arm.

Hi CGATCX25GTITURBO
Thanks for the reply, I can understand exactly what you're saying with regard to worn rocker arms but what I don't understand is how the camshaft extension bearing can somehow alter the position of the camshaft?
Citroening - I'll post some pics in the Introduction section shortly.
Rally is a maybe if the car's together & useable by then

Put simply the cam 'does' move a bit :)

Old tech motor, clearances as wide as you like; and a long cam like these can have a bit flex in it at the pulley end. I've seen them snap.

Oh great................

In fact after adjusting the camshaft bearing & the tappets and replaced the 4 drivebelts, the car doesn't now run properly.
It has a misfire so I'll have to sort that - run out of time tonight.

Thanks
John
