Diesel particulate filter on later HDi's ?

Post by HDI »

What is the maintenance procedure on these and can it be done by the owner,or, disabled/disconnected ? I'm considering a 1.6 or 2.0 C4 HDi but if there are are hoops to be jumped through on this issue it may deter me.

i dismantled one on a 2005 1.6 HDI 307 that and the cat sit on the front of the engine, and the two parts are held together by a large band clamp,

i hear your not meant to steam clean them out but i did, then blow it through thoroughly with compressed air

If you do a lot of motorway miles or dual carriage way work at 50mph and above then a particulate filter should be okay. But if its all stop start work and town work then they are not a good idea.

They can clog and i have heard that 1l of Eolys fluid to 1/4 of a tank of fuel will clean them out but i have not tried it that way yet. The method i have used in the past is a bottle of Millers fuel treatment and a mexican tune up to blow them out.

i think the replacement interval for a particulate filter on a C4 is 150k but you may be able to clean it out with the above Eolys and 1/4 tank and get some more miles out of it.

More and more diesels are going the particulate filter way now

My usage is mainly high speed work but I still don't want the hassle and expense of topping up fluid. If it's disabled does the engine management or any other light come on ?

as far as i know and it is only what i have heard (never tried it myself) it will put the light on but there must be a way to disable it as people do remove them.

i would have thought someone on this site must have done so by now - try doing a search?

Yes! I had my particle filter drilled out and the ECU amended nearly a year ago. I've not had any messages or warnings on the screen and it went through the MOT OK a couple of months ago with only a slightly higher smoke reading than in previous years. The car is a Mk 2 C5 HDI 2ltr.

Has anyone de FAPed a 2.2, if so did it give a noticable improvement in fuel consumption?

If you try my method, it effectively removes the dpf, but doesn't put the light on.
This is the most simple method available.

I have put this elsewhere but here it is again.

Simplest and cheapest way to remove a particle filter - this is for a C5 2.2 HDI - much improved performance and fuel economy

1. Remove the particle filter and gut it - masonry drills are very good - leave the cat converter in place - put empty pipe/cylinder back in exhaust and connect pressure pipes
2. Now to trick the computer - drill a small hole on the plastic inlet pipe to the turbo between the turbo and the engine breather pipe - insert a nipple (eg gardening drip system nipple) into the hole then attach a small pipe (drip irrigation pipe or fuel line) to the nipple
3. Attach the other end to the low pressure (downstream) inlet to the pressure differential sensor - blank the low pressure (downstream) pipe you have taken off to stop exhaust gas coming through

The small vacuum created by the turbo effectively creates the right pressure differential. No more beeps, limp modes, use less fuel and you can simply put a particle filter back in if you want to.

That is all you have to do - no alteration of the engine computer file - Lexia will show particle filter regenerated.

Top up the fuel additive tank with diesel and reset with Lexia.
