The end is here from Xantia

Post by imperial21 »

I think sadly my car has had its day, A very poor fail
We actualy gave up with the mot 3/4 of the way through ! bounus i did nt have to pay, The garage took pity on me !
Mot fails include
steering rack excessive play both sides.
both handbarake cables
both drop links
Rear radius bearing ( might be able to get an adviceryut need doing )
rear discs & pads
Other odds and sods
I would have fixed the car if it was nt for the steering rack !
What do you all think ?
Anyone know af another xantia 110bhp for sale cheap ?

The rack isn't a horrible job - I'd sooner do that than a heater matrix!
What would you spend getting another that may not be as good as an
Exclusive spec? http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/1999-CITROEN- ... 3a76af21f5" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

BTW, It IS a 110 - I've checked! Better the devil you know.

I have done the heater matrix already and i thought it was relatively easy !
I guess i should say the rack and rear suspension worry me the most !

steering rack ends arent too bad to do and it aint the whole rack you do it from the wheel arches (or thats how i did mine) , basically they unsrew with a set of decent waterpump pliers or a set of stilsons(do a search and there is a thread on here somewhere how to do them) ,

when i did mine i found a website called livingston auto spares( google it ) you put your reg in and then find the steering section and search for the part called rack end, (make sure you get the right one as the later xantias had bigger ones), the ones i ordered for my hdi 110 was FTR4748 thats the part number on http://www.livingstonautoparts.co.uk/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

drop links are 2 bolts each side again some are diffrent than others (plenty of advice on here how to do them im sure) also your best to get citroen ones or ( i cant remember the name of them now begins with a l and sounds german) but the cheap ones on ebay fail quite quickly,

brakes and pads i dont know as i havent done them on a xantia,

personally id do it up and keep it

Does really depend on whether the play found is on the inner knuckle of
the track rods or the rack and pinion itself. Is it actually the inner or the
outer as the track rod ends will give excessive play although a decent MOT
guy should be specific with you especially if he knows you do the spannering.

Lemforder for the drop links?

It wasn't that long ago I bought a brand new rack on ebay for £15 and it was local
so I picked it up on the way home from the Ford (??? eh???) main steeler! Just got
to look thoroughly on ebay as you'll get what you're after - after all, everyone
probably feels the same about a rack change as you do so demand will be modest?

I've never seen the rear arms go on a Xantia yet but if it's the same as the Xm, CX,
GS/A it's only awkward undoing the piston on the arm itself.

I would change the rack by choice as on lock the steering makes some awful noises, He say s inner arm has play. Looking on ebay the rack is cheap enough. Can they be changed with the engine in situ ?
I do tow often with my car which will help to wear the suspension.
I am not worried about handbrake cables, drop links, rear discs i planed to do one day as calipers have corroded and taken the old pads and discs out.

The only item that needs removal is the OSF lower wishbone and drop link
(the link just to make it really straightforward and you're changing it anyhow!)

I suggest unclipping the front dogbone also, and loosening the ARB clamp bolts on the nearside. This simplifies getting stuff out the way.

I hope your getting a good interest rate
If you dont want to go digging too deep into your xant then yes you cant go far wrong with a c5, they are nice cars as im sure you now know and if its a good one it should give years of fairly trouble free service, do you have a lexia?
