This came out of my gearbox with the oil...!!

Post by RussellF97 »

1995 ZX .19D non-turbo manual box.

Just tipping the old oil into a container for disposal when I spotted this along with some other metal particles. It's a bit of a long shot, but does anyone with a deep and intimate knowledge of ZX gearboxes know what this is part of? The lower edge is where it's broken off something, and it's non-magnetic. Should I start budgeting for a new 'box...?

It's a millimetric scale on the rule by the way

It doesn't look like a tooth, possibly just part of the casting, if it still works OK and isn't loosing oil I wouldn't worry about it.

the usual thing that fails on these box's is the diff, bits fly out through the casing along with all the gear oil,

I thought that too, wondered why we were looking at a ruler. :)

It does look like a casting piece of some kind though.

Thanks for replies, folks. Everything seems hunky-dory and there's no weird noises when going along so I'll just put it to the back of my mind for now. 8-)

I'd be worried if a ruler fell out

Seriously, yes, it looks like a bit of harmless casting. I've been all over a BE3 like a rash and I don't immediately recognise it...

I've seen ball bearings drain out with the oil before now and the 'box keeps going...

CitroJim: Thanks for your reply. The other side of the piece is rough as well, so I guess it's just a tang that's taken 17 years to finally ping off!
