Questions about changing gearbox oil

Post by waynedance »

Want to change the oil in the gearbox. My Haynes Manual does not cover the 2.2 HDI engine, are the gearboxes the same as other models?

Had a look earlier in the year and could not find the fill plug, any help would be great.

I *think* the fill plug is on the back top of the diff housing, not very easy to get to as you need to do it from underneath without getting a transmission oil shower or pouring it over the subframe area. I'm basing this thought on the box fitted to the XUD11's (the 2.1 fitted to 406's and various Citroens too) and some V6 models too. Certainly I remember doing the V6's and it was a bit of a pain to get to.

Refill it, with the correct amount of oil!, from the breather or reverse light swich on the top of the box.

That's cheating ;)

Although will be OK I guess, although given its not going to initially fill where it should the correct amount would need to be poured in rather than the traditional method of slowly filling via the filler plug until level.

Come to think of it, I cannot recall how much the larger box's want, I know its 2 litres for the smaller ones...

Then again, filling via the "cheat" with 2 litres, letting it settle then examining the level plug may be an idea.

To piggy back a question on this thread.
I've just done a gearbox oil change but didn't have the car level so put in 1.95lit of the Comma 75/80 stuff.
Ithought it was strange that it took so much, but I relied on using the same blocks under the jack, but didn't count on the floor not being level.
Ever since I've been having problems getting into 3rd 4th and 5th. having to double de clutch almost each time.
I went under again today with the car level this time and drained off about 50-100ml, from the filling plug, till the drips had stopped.
However I'm still experiencing problems getting into 3rd 4th and sometimes 5th.
I'll recheck the level when I do the oil change next week, but have I ruined the gearbox by overfilling it ( I did about 100 miles) or is the problem onset just co-incidental?

Not likely to have done any damage, so it's probably a co-inkidink
