Xantia Rear Arm Bearings

Post by KAD »

My Xantia may need rear suspension arm bearings. The rear wheels look fairly straight from behind but i'm not entirely sure. If they are worn, is there a noticeable amount of play in the arms as this would be easier to spot?

Pump it up to full height and then stand about ten yards behind it. If the rear wheels look like cows legs (lotsa negative camber) you've got it.
You can't feel any slack as long as the suspension is pressurised (as long as its not really bad). If you jack up the back and then select lowest height, you shouild be able to feel/see any slack if you apply a crowbar to the trailing arm. Sometimes the bearing dry up and appear to be rigid. In this case you won't be able to move the trailing arm up and down. Also a pointer to replacement.

You could also check the inside shoulder of the tyres for another indicator to back up the above. Wear on the insides can indicate wrong pressures, or worn bearings.
