C5 II 2.0 petrol - opinions

Unread post by triumphtoledo »

Wifey dearest has multiplied recently - how awfully inconsiderate of her - and wishes to sell her 2002 Megane cabrio and get something bigger.

She owned a petrol 1.8 16v Xantia before and was delighted with it; especially when her friends and family commented on how comfortable it was. It went fairly well too.

We are thinking of a C5 II; she likes driving my car and would like it even more if it were not a diesel. She does not like driving diesels...

The obvious choice would be a 2.0-litre C5 II, from 2004 - 2008 vintage. Wifey likes to put her foot down and so I think a 2.0-litre would be best. The 1.8 tends to be in base spec and lacks the toys that she likes in my Exclusive.

How do the experts on this forum rate the 2.0i engine? I hope it is not the God-awful HPI unit that 'graced' the first generation C5. Are they prone to any issues?

The petrol engine is good, but avoid the HPI like the plague.
Don’t get the automatic transmission, it’s in the habit of not moving in dangerous situations:

The 2.0 16v engine is a good one, it has been around a good while and has proven to be reliable. You won't find a HPi in the C5II, it was discontinuted well before the C5I finished production.

Thanks guys - I am pleased to hear that the 2.0-litre petrol is held in high esteem.

It is a shame about the auto, as there are some very cheap autos local to me but she does prefer swapping the cogs.

I'll let you know how we get on.
