G reg 309style 1.3l -what would you do?

Post by sarah9959 »

Hi, new to the forum, and quite ignorant about cars but have a question following our beloved 309 failing the MOT. Failed on brake pads, discs, handbrake, tyres. We can get all this fixed but also have a problem with the spark plugs which cannot be removed, seem to have become 'molded' on and can't remove them. Do you think it is worth putting the money into getting it through the MOT given the problem with the plugs?

Have 148K on the clock, we bought for £100 3 years ago and really love this car despite it being somewhat tatty. Would love to keep it going as like the older, boxy style and the manual choke.

Thanks for any opinions, and sorry for seeming ignorant, as I said, I am!

It's uncommon for spark plugs to become stuck - glow plugs, yes.

If you can't shift them with a correctly fitting socket and extension and the motor fully at operating temperature, then it may be one for an expert... Lighty or Malc should be able to offer comment.

i certainly have never had a spark plug stuck solid, although i have had some very occasionally very very tight to the point you think they aint going to shift, or even shear off in the head,

i have heard of this happening,

who and what means have been used/tried to shift the plus up to now,

i do have a 2 foot knuckle bar and a 4 foot scaffold pole

Actually thinking again, its a 1.3, it might have that "suitcase" engine. I've not seen one of those for a long time. That may explain why its welded into place given its an iron (I think) head.

Some PlusGas around the offending plug and allowed to soak in overnight (some people say you can use coke cola) may help although extreme care must be taken when undoing it not to angle the socket in any way or you risk snapping it off which is both annoying and upsetting.

thanks Spider, will give it a go and if it works might consider doing rest of work for MOT, rather than buying new car -btw thanks for your response to the 309 or 205 question as well

If its a 1.3 it will have the old Talbot Horizon G2 engine which started life in a Simca. The plugs are facing the front of the car and have rubber grommets round them that stop the crap getting round the plug holes (I think they are taper seat plugs? cant remember?).I bet these grommets are long gone so very careful cleaning, blow out with airline, soak with penetrating etc, will be needed. Get a professional to attempt this job first before you spend money on the MOT failures.Providing its not a "Bull in a China Shop" job with a long bar they should undo. Two scenarios, they undo, great! so get it through the MOT. They wont and snap off !!! dump the car and get the 309 Diesel (Keep the old 309 for some spares???)

Hi Oldpug

We've put the 309 to rest - yet to decide whether to scrap or see if someone wants it for spares/repair - and have bought the diesel.

Pretty much what you recommended, but without paying the mechanic to tinker with the sparks!

Many thanks
