i wonder if anyone can help with this one, i've got a 1993 citroen 2.0 volcane petrol and it pinks quite badly. whether hot or cold, it makes no difference, it gets worse under load BUT IT'S THERE MOST OF THE TIME. MILEAGE IS 160K BUT IT RUNS AND DRIVES VERY NICELY WITH NO APPARENT LOSS OF PERFORMANCE, DOES ANYBODY HAVE ANY IDEAS?
THANKS
ZX VOLCANE PETROL PINKING

If this ZX of yours has a standard distributor body - then it may be possible to correct the ignition timing slightly - by turning it - to avoid the pinking. This must however be done with measurement equipment connected - to avoid further mis-adjustment.
If your ZX has AEI (all-electronic-ignition) system - then it's not possible to do this.
Problems known to cause an engine pinking - independent of engine temp :
1) False air = too lean mixture. Caused by leaks on the inlet manifold.
2) Defective sensors - i.e. a bad lambda sonde signalling too rich exhaust mix - when it's not.
3) Wrong fuel octane rate. My bet is that your 2.0 Volcane runs best on 97-98 octane fuel. It MUST be unleaded if your car is catalyst fitted.

I think that's the first question.
Are you running it on Super unleaded or the cheap stuff (premium?). If you havn't already, then try Super.
Shouldn't the 2.0 engine have a knock sensor anyway? Or is that just on the Xantia.
