Digging for coal!

Post by citroenxm »

Started my HDi up yesterday afternoon, to a sound of what at first seemed a Tappet noise. However it cleared with lifting the revs.. but returned on idle again.. Anyway, I decided to have a peek, and to my surprise noticed a load of "Coal" around injector nearest the Cam Belt....

Also while the engine was running I could see fuel bubbleing out of a small hole in the "coal", so I concluded the fire proof seal had given way.. I had to leave it though to get home.

Today I took a closer look. However, I found when the engine got to tempeture and nice and hot after a run, this "Coal" had gone soft, and looked more like mealted plastic!

As seen, I managed to get the injector out.. I found a spare injector with what looked like a decent copper seal and plastic sleeve and fitted it. We've been for a 100 mile trip today, and so far it looks dry..

Ill need to get a new set of copper seals and sleeves to get the job done properly, but it got me going in an emergency.

We have to repair loads of these on the 1.6 HDI unit, the 2.0 are rarely affected. The 1.6 is much more difficult, as the injector is about 25% longer, so harder to get out.
We have a reaming tool to recut the head as they are often burnt

Yes its the same as on 2.2 16v HDi's as the injectors go through the inlet manifold.

I completely agree though the 2.oi 8v units rarely do this, but I cannot moan at 210k original, so a new set is well over due!

The orface the injector sits in was very clean though, and the replacment injector slid in and sat nicely.

Eeugh :x That's horrible Paul! A mixture of oil and soot that is...

It would be excellent for paining your fence...

No wonder some injectors can stick fast. I can see it could well set like glue...

It sets VERY hard! Ive got the remains in a ball, Ill fish the remains out the bin, but it goes HARD an brittle....

OIL!!?? As far as I know, she doesnt use any oil, so wheres that comming from! Or would it be more from oil spillage from the filler cap, just above that injector??

Anyway, this is what it turns into when it cools down:

Great pictures Paul - better than 1000 words. Perhaps job would have been more serious had it been ignored?

Well, you got home no problem, without car letting you down.

I suppose strictly speaking, those living on the Wirral might have been upset to see New Brighton relocated into Merseyside :-D :-D :-D :-D :-D
