Xantia Mk1 Clutch pedal clicking

My clutch pedal has been making a strange clicking noise/sensation when I've been depressing the clutch for the past couple of weeks.
I thought the cable was on the way out, so purchased a spare just incase.
Jumped in it today to drive off, depressed the pedal and something suddenly let go/broke.
Have just managed to find what the problem was .... the metal clip that holds the the cable nipple in at the top/pedal end has snapped on one side.
Mileage is around 165K.
Is this a common fault on higher mileage Mk1's?
Should I be looking for another fault somewhere too?
Clutch actuation seemed to be ok prior to this issue.

Is the pedal and plastic clutch cable locator one piece. Is it worth buying a new one or will replacing the metal clip suffice?

This is very common on all Xantias with clutch cables.

Replace the plastic part at the same time. Its good fun! Have a search on here for instructions, or perhaps someone else will post a direct link.

If the clutch is particularly heavy it will break the clip. The ultimate cure is to fit a nice new clutch!

I don't think 'fun' is exactly the right word. It was hard enough to get the pedal out, gawd alone knows how it's going to be getting it back in!

The clutch clip broke on my S1 Xantia when I was on holiday in Scotland at a remote lodge. I had to get the car towed to a main dealer in Perth and they had to take the dash off to replace the plastic clip. Cost me £370 to replace a £4 clip

Is the usual method by removing the pedal or are you guys jointed in a funny way?

Yes, removing the pedal is the way you do it. When you put it back you can put the bolt in from the left instead of the way it is fitted originally,makes life a lot easier. £340 to do this job is shameful, especially as the main dealer should be familiar with it. Perhaps all their mechanics are under 30 and don't remember when xantias were their bread and butter! Then again perhaps they're just plain greedy.

Seeing as you've got a new clutch cable, I'd be fitting that at the same time as the new clip. Old clutch cables seem to make the clutch pedal feel heavier, presumably to do with the cable wearing internally

Yes I was thinking this too .... visually the cable looks to be in GWO, but it's the inner teflon liner that wears over time

Hmmmm the bolt was already in from the left side .... omg I can't imagine that it could possibly fit in from the right?!!

Got a clip assembly coming in the post from Ebay .... a few for sale on there, so obviously a regular issue!

yes it's originally fitted from the right! You have to remove the plunger under the brake pedal and use a bar to keep the brake pedal out of the way. It's still a struggle to get the bolt out.

Well maybe this car has already had clutch pedal issues then. Can't see the logic of putting a bolt in from the RHS .... think someone must've done it as a joke!

logic doesn't come into it, it's just built that way. Any xantia that's 14 years old has probably had two or three clips done.
