Beam Axle Repair

Unread post by Chlorate »

Seems that rear axle assemblies for ZXs 306s Xsaras etc are becoming somewhat of a rarity on eBay.
Not that mine needs repairing at the moment, but it'll be an eventuality...
People seem to be selling repair parts for them these days:
Axle Tube
Bearing Kits

Total part cost £160 delivered, I recall seeing full assemblies going for about £150 plus postage.
I'm assuming it's going to be a bit of a 'mare to rebuild them though, special tools all around methinks. I'd be very tempted to fit grease nipples too.

Anyone seen/used these kits, any opinions?

Of course my car still has the wrong back end on it... Kicking myself for not buying the GTi-6 axle when I saw it....

Bearings went on one side of our ZX. Garage advised a second hand replacement of the
whole axle (we found one off a Xsara from a dismantlers) in preference to a repair kit.

Chlorate, stripping and repairing the rear axle is not a difficult job. I've done a few to reset the ride height. The only special tool I used was a slide hammer with an adapter to pull out the torsion bars as they can get rusted in, but they do come out. And a specially made spacer tool to set up the trailing arm to get the ride height correct.

If you want to take the axle apart, you can rob parts off different axles to rebuild yours.
