Citroen C5 (2008) Rear Suspension Rattle

Post by mobilemule »

My Citroen C5 Saloon HDI has developed an annoying rattle from the off side rear suspension (metal spring type not pneumatic) or at least that is where the rattle appears to come from when driving over bumpy roads such as metal grids. It does not seem to happen over speed bumps only small bumpy areas in the road I have replaced the small rod connecting anti roll bar with the suspension links but this has made no difference. Any ideas?

sounds like rear droplinks. I had mine done on C5 58 plate @ 32k miles. cost £300 at local garage.

I had the offside rear drop-link replaced but this has not cured the rattle. Do you think it could it be a spring end fitting or a defective shock absorber?

Drop links would have been my first guess too, but otherwise I'd say possibly shock mounts as your description suggests its noisy under rapid compression/rebound where the shock will be loaded/stretched repeatedly. Always worth checking the spare wheel well too to make sure nothing's rattling in there (if you haven't already).

Its got to be something that is not under permanant load to give a continious rattle, drop links would have been my first choice but it could be shock absorber mountings or possibly anti roll bar bushes.

Thank you for assistance in trying to solve my annoying suspension rattle. I will investigate the shocker mounts next. Do you have any suggestions as to how i should check these mounts?

Just grab the shock absorbers and see if you can move them. You can check the anti roll bar bushes by levering the bar with a crowbar or similar and and again check for movement.
