Xantia funny electric probs

I own an l reg xantia 18i and yesterday the reversing lights came on and the fuse box started smokeing .......After disconecting the switch on the gearbox the lights were still on so i removed the plug from the lights in the tailgate.........This morning i had a flat battery and had to jump start the car in turn i found the head lights on but the switch was off .....is this a common fault with the Xantia as i have not owned one before .

Have a good search of this site. I think someone had similar problems involving the reversing light when they fitted a trailer socket.

Ty Jeromey it has at 1 piont had a tow hitch fitted i will check see if they have just cut the socket off and hid the wiring

Towing socket is fitted by breaking a a plug/socket connection and putting in a double sided plug/socket in between or similar.
Could be the case. On BX it goes behing near side rear light, may be there as well on Xantia.
