strut top removal
How easy would it be to remove the strut tops on xantia v6 thats on the floor with no wheels on it ? The car is in my local scrap yard, i cant jack it up so i dont know if its possible ? I was thinking the strut tops would be useful spares for my car.

Re: strut top removal
Car needs to be up, as the strut needs to come out, sphere off, and top comes down out the bottom...
As long as both are S2 they should be compatible.. But S1 V6/VSX tops are different slightly to S2 sorts...

Re: strut top removal
Indeed. Unique to the V6 due to the V6 having bigger strut pistons. Worth recovering and stashing though as they're like rocking horse poo.citroenxm wrote:But S1 V6/VSX tops are different slightly to S2 sorts...
Get the struts too. You could then use tops and struts on any Hydractive Xantia then but you might find the front a tad stiff. The bigger struts were to compensate for the greater weight of the V6 power unit.

Re: strut top removal
Did it once on a normal Xantia, took hours and I was exhausted, and at the end of it I discovered the strut top was actually dead.
You need to remove the strut from the wheel so you can make enough space to remove the strut top.
It involved lots of lump hammer action to bash the strut free at the bottom.
Can you not ask the scrap yard to lift the car up a bit?

Re: strut top removal
I'd recommend any V6 owner bereft of a spare set would do well to get hold of them... Be a shame to see them crushed...

Re: strut top removal
Hi Jim
Are you sure about the Xantia later V6 front struts having different diameter pistons?
We had a similar change in strut rod diameter with XM's.
The piston rods were increased from 22mm dia to 25mm dia to increase service fatigue life.
As a result the rod top taper changed and different strut heads were needed.
The piston diameter on both types was unchanged at 40mm.

Re: strut top removal
Not actually measured the piston itself John but I do know the taper is a good deal larger on the V6 struts. If you hold a 'standard' and V6 top together the difference is very clearly visible.

Re: strut top removal
Hi Jim
I will see if I can find any Xantia documentation to check this.
The XM taper presents exactly the same problem but by keeping matched struts and strut heads either type may be fitted.
Because the pistons are the same diameter Citroen permit mixing of strut sizes on a car.
Could be useful to know that if all the Xantia pistons are the same size.
