Bonnet gas struts
HI, my son has a Peugeot 406 which has gas struts on the bonnet which makes it so easy to open, I wanted to know if I could fit these to my 2 series Xantia HDI because the bonnet weighs a ton, I was thinking they could be fitted useing Epoxy glue or something similar.

Re: Bonnet gas struts
its such a shame the xantia never got struts... the lesser xsara got them.. they would have to fit between the bonnet under side and inner wing top edge.. im not sure how much clearence there is for them... i doubt epoxy would be strong enough.. the spigots would have to be welded or bolted in place.. theres some force in those struts.. as for fixing them plates may need to be added as theres not enough lip. . you dont want the epoxy giving when the bonnets up.. one strut is not enough to hold it up....!

Re: Bonnet gas struts
It's odd because as far as I know all Pugs of that era had them (306 certainly) and the XM did..
I believe the reason the XM had them and the Xantia didn't was the fact that it's rarely necessary to lift a Xantia bonnet
Unlike an XM...

Re: Bonnet gas struts
Does seem to vary though.
As far as I know no Saxo's had them (not sure please clarify) but 106's all newer shape had them.
No 206's had them which was a shame although given the lightness of the bonnet not a problem but they are quite neat in a way generally, one less thing to do.
All newer shape 306's had them.
Some very early 406's did not (not many I think only a few N plates) but the bonnet was very heavy so I guess they had to. Surprising to learn the Xantia never had them.
I dare say there will be some "kits" floating on Ebay to do this if needed though.

Re: Bonnet gas struts
So pleasant to see that all models of Citroen are welcomed equally here.
Jim's comment made me think that it might be better to areldite the unused Xantia bonnets down.
Give some resistance when the crap design strut heads fail.

You're as warped as I am.
When I had some 605 struts serviced, they actually replaced them with 406 struts - the regasser reckoned they were a slightly newer/better item and the stroke compatible.
I've seen two Xantia bonnets bent (kinked) where a varlet has yanked on it to close, failing to observe the rigid prop.

have to admit even at 208k and 400 miles avereage a week my bonnet is never open on the hdi - only ever to borrow the battery or check oil / water which never moves.. fill washers and service.. nothing else...CitroJim wrote:It's odd because as far as I know all Pugs of that era had them (306 certainly) and the XM did..

John, I was only joking....
Yep, I have a prime example of this sort of damage on my V6... Happened very early in the life of the car I believe...addo wrote: I've seen two Xantia bonnets bent (kinked) where a varlet has yanked on it to close, failing to observe the rigid prop.

Obviously didn't think of us airside workers then!! Almost every day I'm asked by security to open the bonnet.. don't know what they expect to find except an Hdi engine and a few wires of course!!

What you want is a clear perspex bonnet...

Re: Bonnet gas struts
It would be fairly simple to make but perspex is very expensive, i remember from when i had to replace some perspex windows it cost a fortne, perspex is shaped with heat too so might not fare to well above the warms of the engine, you may end up with a vacume moulding of the engine after a long wait in traffic lol
