CX Tyres - Help!

Unread post by jwalshe »

Okay... so a bit confused by the whole tyre thing.

The car is a Prestige (1985 S1) and has alloy wheels (and sadly tyres with plenty of tread but they've been stood for 7 years and have cracked around the sides). Have attached a photo for reference. Is there a way of reducing the cost of new tyres for these wheels? Because the quotes I've had so far are unlike anything else I've experienced in my motoring lifetime!! Unbelievable prices.

Perhaps it would just be cheaper to ditch the alloys and get some steel wheels? Would that be such a terrible faux pas?

Any advice or wisdom would be hugely appreciated. Thanks in advance!

I have never priced tyres for those but I understand they are pricey!

Quite a few CXs have been fitted with fairly modern Alfa Romeo wheels and they can look stunning on them and with cheaper tyre prices too. They bolt straight on.

Ello! Hmmm... I don't think I could bring myself to alloy fit wheels from any other car. I'm a bit of a purist to be honest - like things to look as they should. But I'd be willing to go for steel wheels with CX wheeltrims to avoid paying the prices I've been quoted for these alloys!

Still hoping there's an alternative route tyre-wise. I've spent all my savings on completely restoring the car. Seems a tragedy to be scuppered by bloody tyres! :-(

Yes, I like cars to look original too. Can you not find a tyre size closest to your CXs tyres and get modern tyres for it?

There is a simple solution James.

Your car has Metric rims, hence the high price of TRX tyres. The exact same style of alloy rim was available on imperial 14". Get yourself a set of those, and only the real anoraks would know the difference.

Shame I just sold 4 14" on Ebay, they do come up quite often though.
I have Alfa ones on my GTi T2 and think they look great.
