Xantia lower ball joint.

Unread post by Stepto1 »

It's that time of year again and the HDI is booked in on Wednesday for its MOT.

Had a good look over and the only fail I've found us a split cover on the near side balljoint.

No problem I thought, till I saw it requires a Citroen special tool!

Any thoughts on doing this job at home?

There's no play in the ball joint, just a split cover.

Many thanks.

What about torquing it up after? Just clamp on the grips and nip it up?

I've just seen that Seely do a tool for less then a tenner. Might treat myself.

Can you not buy a new dust boot? They're sold as generic items here.

I believe you can. Robert Smart once posted an eBay link...

I need some too, for the same reason on Rattiva...

This is a the tool you need Stepto.

Plus a 35mm socket and a long breaker bar. I have a 5 foot one.

My method is to remove the hub complete and clamp it in a big vice.

The tool is needed for doing it up again properly. The thread should be given a smear of Loctite strictly.

5 foot breaker bar!!! Bloody hell, are they really that tight?

Might just let the garage tackle it while it's in for the MOT.

There appears to be a good selection of boots on e-bay. You'd need to measure the boot to see what dia holes you require and see if there's one to match.

I had a look on eBay. Not sure which boot I'd need without getting the old one off.

Just bought a new bottom pulley for £30 in p&p off eBay which I was happy with.
