Painting sill covers and bumper bottoms?

Post by waynedance »

How hard would it be to colour code the bottom of my c5?

Would it be better left to get a price from a body shop, worried about the finish I could achieve and about the paint cracking and flaking off.

Just thinking out aloud.

It would not be hard to do, however unless your used to bodywork I would leave it to a bodyshop. They are vulnerable areas and would soon chip, scuff, get stone chips etc.

I think it would look terrible though, I have seen it done before and in my opinion these bits are black for a very good reason. A car generally needs some black trim to break up the colour and give it some contrast. Depending on the colour of your C5 will depend on how bad it looks, I have seen a few, the worst being a white one.

I've noticed a good number of PSA parts have slightly different plastics depending on whether the part is colour coded or remains as moulded.

My guess is the "as moulded" part contains elements that help it shed dirt, while the paintable version is compounded to maximise paint retention (>>pretension<< viz - Android auto-correct is clearly not retentive, but pretentious) under stressed conditions (ie; impact or heat cycling).

Ok best to leave black, I also seen a white one on a 2002 plate.
